The running community suffered a great loss last Saturday, November 3, 2007, when Ryan Shay died while running the Olympic Trials for the Marathon. Ryan was known for his intensity and passion, his work ethic, and his dedication to the principals of being a self-made- man. He brought a blue collar, tough style to his running, believing that hard work could make up for any shortcomings in talent. Ryan was a regular guy trying to squeeze every ounce out of his ability, just like us. He respected the goals of his wife and his teammates, always encouraging people to buck up and go after their goals. He never settled; he never gave up; he made you want to do the same.

Sunday, November 11, at 3:00pm, there will be a Memorial Tribute to Ryan Shay. The location is the wooden footbridge behind Autzen Stadium on Pre's Trail, by the dog park. We welcome you to join us as a few short words are shared, followed by a 5.5 mile walk/run: the distance he ran in his marathon before he lost his life. For those who cannot or do not wish to walk/run, a short vigil will be held following the Memorial at the same location. If you wish, you may wear a gold ribbon in his memory or bring a candle. All are welcome to attend.
